Sondra Proctor, MIS September Fan of the MonthShare
Sondra Proctor of Holt, Mich., has been named the September 2006 MIS Fan of the Month. Proctor will receive an MIS hospitality package for two people to a 2007 race at MIS, in addition to an MIS hat, a T-shirt and a soft-sided cooler.
Proctor is the second MIS Fan of the Month eligible for the 2007 MIS Fan of the Year. She will be eligible to win a trip for two to Homestead, Florida to witness NASCAR's Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November 2007, along with the final race in the chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup.
As if that wasn¿t enough, the MIS Fan of the Year prize also includes the use of the MIS showcar to display outside his/her home for a day (much like the Stanley Cup tour). The 2007 MIS Fan of the Year also receives two tickets to the MIS event of their choice for the next 10 years.
Please rate on a scale from 1 to 10 how big of an MIS fan you are? Why? "A 10 for sure! I take great pride in having such a wonderful track so close to home. I¿ve watched each year as MIS strives to meet the needs of the fans and go above and beyond our expectations. MIS is also one of the best tracks to watch multi-groove racing in the corners that has me holding my breath everytime. Don¿t forget about the famous 'Michigan Wave,¿ which is incredible to watch and participate in."
What is your most memorable race?
¿I don¿t have one memorable NEXTEL Cup race because they have all been fantastic in their own right. I did attend an IROC race many years back that jumps right out as a most cherished memory. I was a volunteer with the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the late 1990¿s and we were at the track with some of the various children who loved NASCAR. They took us in the pit area to meet some of the drivers. The first thing that jumped out at me was the kindness and compassion shown to everyone by the MIS staff and the drivers who took the time to participate. I still get a lump in my throat when I think about it. I have a picture of Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr. crossing the finish line that still brings a tear to my eye. I was honored to have the kids meet some of their heroes that day.¿
Who is your favorite driver and why?
¿My favorite driver has been Jeff Burton ever since I attended my first NASCAR race at MIS in June of 1997. I must admit that I started watching Burton because my father managed an automotive parts store that was sponsoring him at the time and he was the only name I knew. However, as I fell in love with NASCAR and watched other drivers, I felt that Burton was the only choice for me. His family values, his on-screen and on-track display of passion for racing and respect for his fellow peers was what I was looking for in a driver. He is a safety advocate and a fantastic driver. Even though he struggled in the past, I always believed he would return to winning form. During my last visit to MIS in August of 2006, I saw many Jeff Burton T-shirts on adults and kids, which was nice.¿
What is the greatest race weekend experience for you?
¿I don¿t have an all-time favorite experience. Every race at MIS is memorable. I couldn¿t survive a year without going to MIS for two race weekends and experiencing the people, sunburn, souvenirs, autographs, sponsor tents, traffic and parking. Every race I attend solidifies my love of NASCAR and MIS.¿
Who comes to the races with you?
¿Most of the time I go with friends or family. My entire family (mom, dad, brothers, sisters) are NASCAR fans and love attending races at MIS. I also have a coworker who is a fan and has attended races with me in the past. One year I attended a race by myself. I wasn¿t going to miss it!¿
You mentioned that you sit in a different seat each year. How did that come about and why is that
¿My father has been able to purchase tickets through his work. Most recently he manages an Auto Value Parts Store in Lansing. By purchasing tickets through the company, we never know where we will be sitting. This is fine with us. We¿ve been all over the track, but most of the time, sit in Turn 3 or 4. This is great because of the side-by-side racing that happens in the corners. We¿ve sat in Turn 1 and must say it¿s great watching the cars come out of pit road and have them come at you off the frontstretch. It¿s quite a rush! We¿ve sat in the center grandstands in the front row and also the 30th row. We¿ve even sat on the start-finish line and over by the tunnel. We can honestly say we¿ve had the full MIS experience.¿
You participated in the LAPS Walk in August of 2006. How was that experience?
¿I have done a lot of volunteer work in my life and the LAPS Walk ranks right up there as another organization I would love to be apart of. I never really understood what a traumatic brain injury (TBI) was even thought I witnessed what happened to Ernie Irvan and Jerry Nadeau. I have a new respect for what people have to go through with TBI. As a participant, I was able to support the efforts to increase safety awareness. The event was in the infield at MIS on Thursday before the August race weekend and I was honored to walk around the 2-mile track with Irvan, Nadeau, Greg Biffle, Rusty Wallace, Scott Wimmer and Larry McReynolds. I received a true taste of the compassion and love that people have for each other. My goal is to participate next year. I was able to support a great organization and walk around a track that I love, along with meeting some heroes along the way (and I¿m not talking about just the drivers).¿
If you could say one sentence to any driver, who and what would that be?
¿I would tell Jeff Burton: I believe in you and I know you still and always will be one of NASCAR¿s greatest drivers.¿
