"Fan of the Year" Suzette Burtoft Receives Visit From MIS ShowcarShare
When Suzette Burtoft learned she was named the Michigan International Speedway 'Fan of the Year' her excitement could not be contained. However, despite her excitement, she knew she had a lot of work to do.
Her first order of business as 'Fan of the Year' was to put the MIS Showcar to good use. As part of her prize package, Burtoft was able to use the showcar for one day in her hometown of Medina, Ohio. With that in mind, Burtoft displayed the showcar outside her current place of employment, Highland High School. Throughout the school day on Friday, Sept. 22, Burtoft challenged her students by taking them out to the car and asking them to write a descriptive paper about the car and how it relates to NASCAR racing.
"It was fun to bring my students out to the car and have them write about what they saw," said Burtoft. "Many of my students don't know a lot about racing, so this was a great eye-opening experience for them."
Burtoft claims that the residents of her northeastern Ohio community and the surrounding area have taken to the growth of NASCAR less than the average American town, but at the least, her students might just have a reason to latch on.
"We have a few NASCAR fans in the group, but I was hoping to get many more of my students excited about racing," said Burtoft. "I always love traveling to MIS and watching the races. Hopefully they will someday."
After school was dismissed for the day, the MIS Showcar moved to the football field where Highland High was hosting Coppoly for Alumni Night. From there, the weather took a turn for the worst as rain moved into the area, thus keeping the car in the trailer. Despite the bad weather, Burtoft was still happy about the day.
"You can't change the weather. These things happen," she said. "It was still a fun day"
Along with the showcar visit, Burtoft's prize package also includes a trip for two to Homestead, Florida to witness NASCAR's November 17-19 Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Burtoft and her husband Scott will witness the season finales of the three premier NASCAR series: the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, the NASCAR Busch Series, and the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series. Burtoft also receives two tickets to the MIS event of her choice for the next decade.
Those looking to join Burtoft as a Fan of the Month and a Fan of the Year need only to go to MISpeedway.com to apply.
