MIS soccer fields ready for playShare
Cleats and nets will soon replace checkered flags and stock cars at Michigan International Speedway.
Beginning on Saturday, Sept. 12, two new soccer fields at MIS will be introduced to the community with the play of its first youth soccer game on that day.
The two new fields, which were built on speedway property in Parking Lot 12, just off Brooklyn Highway, will be a valuable asset to the community.
Previously, the community was using fields that crossed one another, so only one field could be used at a time. With two new fields at MIS, teams from all over mid-Michigan will have more fields to play on.
Village of Brooklyn Manager Victor Cardenas sees the addition of the fields as a great community feature.
“We’ve been looking for a quality field for some time and having a U10 and U12 field will be a great asset for us. We can now use both fields at a time,” Cardenas said. “This has been a real community effort. MIS has provided us with the fields, and the American Legion has donated the goals to us.”
The MIS soccer fields are sized 50 yards by 80 yards for youths 12 and under; and 45 yards by 60 yards for youths 10 and under. Nets for each field were donated by Brooklyn’s American Legion Post 315.
Grading of Lot 12 to create the fields took place last fall and new grass grew this
spring, making the soccer fields ready for use. Lot 12 is typically used for day parking during the speedway’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events in June and August.
Admission to youth soccer games will be free. Anyone may attend.
“We are pleased to provide the community this unique use of our facility. We hope many families can enjoy a great season of soccer in the Irish Hills,” track President Roger Curtis said.
Nestled in the lush Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, Michigan International Speedway is the Great Escape, a venerable NASCAR national park where fans can get away and enjoy the very best in racing and camaraderie. It’s the love of racing and the thrill of a great time for race fans and drivers alike.
