Thomas Schultz wins Race to Vegas contestShare
While enjoying the retirement life following a 42-year career at Ford Motor Co., Thomas Schultz was shocked when he learned of his good fortunes.
Schultz, 75, of Plymouth, Mich., hit the jackpot when he was randomly picked as the winner of Michigan International Speedway’s Race to Vegas contest. A longtime MIS fan who has attended races at the Irish Hills track since the early 1970’s, Schultz will travel to Las Vegas to attend the NASCAR Sprint Cup Awards Ceremony with track President Roger Curtis on Dec. 3-5. It will be the first year the ceremony will be held in Las Vegas in the storied event’s history.
Schultz received a phone call from Curtis to tell him the great news.
“When Mr. Curtis called me I thought something was wrong with my ticket renewal. I was totally surprised when I found out I won,” Schultz said. “I’ve never won anything like this before in my life. I’m so excited I’m speechless. I can’t wait to go.”
Schultz and his guest will receive round-trip coach airfare and hotel accommodations at the famed Wynn Hotel, along with a seat at the banquet. Schultz plans on bringing his 45-year-old son, Thomas Jr., to the ceremony with him. The Schultzes attend race events at MIS every year and enjoy their experience at the track.
“I’ve been bringing my son to the races with me for 12 years and we just love MIS,” Schultz said. “He lives in Boston now and works for Harvard University, but he still travels out to Michigan every summer and attends the races at MIS with me. I will be calling him right away to let him know about this great trip I won.”
Schultz, who lists Matt Kenseth as his favorite driver, was selected among all customers who renewed their tickets and camping for the 2010 season, or mailed in entries on a 3x5 card.
“I am so pleased to take Mr. Schultz and his son to the awards banquet with me,” Curtis said. “We appreciate all the fans that renewed for 2010 or mailed in entries for this contest. MIS has the greatest fans in motorsports and all of us at the track are excited to give one of them, Mr. Schultz, the opportunity of a lifetime to attend this awards ceremony.”
Nestled in the lush Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, Michigan International Speedway is the Great Escape, a venerable NASCAR national park where fans can get away and enjoy the very best in racing and camaraderie. It’s the love of racing and the thrill of a great time for race fans and drivers alike.
Race fans who missed out on renewing tickets can leave a $30 goodwill deposit and ensure the best, guaranteed lowest prices in 2010. Deposits will be accepted through Jan. 5 only. After that, ticket prices will likely increase as demand goes up.
Customers can log onto www.MISpeedway.com or call 800-354-1010 to leave a deposit.
