Suh, Rose make Daytona 500 picks; now it's your turnShare
A number of big names – names fit for the biggest race in motorsports – have locked in their picks for the Daytona 500 and you too can make your pick during Michigan International Speedway’s Fantasy Pick ‘Em Contest, which pits fans choosing weekly winners along with track President Roger Curtis.
Roger’s Fantasy Pick ‘Em contest is free and open to fans until one hour prior to each weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Many fans have already made their picks for the Daytona 500, with Curtis selecting Kevin Harvick.
Fans who have not yet signed up can visit www.MISpeedway.com/rogerpickem and make their selection before noon ET on Sunday.
“Kevin Harvick is my pick this week. He’s won the Daytona 500 before and has Richard Childress engines, which are always strong there,” Curtis said. “It’s not too late for fans to sign up. It’s free and a great way to keep our fans involved in the sport all year long.”
NASCAR fans will Michigan ties that made picks for the Daytona 500 include Detroit native and former University of Michigan basketball star Jalen Rose (who picked Jeff Gordon to win) and current Detroit Lions defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh (who picked Carl Edwards).
“It’s time to bring back the glory,” Rose said. “JG epitomizes greatness and dominance in stock car racing.”
Suh added: "I'm going with my fellow Subway restaurants teammate Carl Edwards. He won the last two races in 2010 and gets a fresh start heading into Daytona for the 2011 season.”
Other big names tapped Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win, most notably Carmelo Anthony, country music superstar Jason Aldean and best-selling author Janet Evanovich.
With five consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup titles on his mantle, Hendrick Motorsports under his hood, and Chad Knaus atop his pit box, Jimmie Johnson is this year’s overall favorite among many top athletes and celebrities.
For Hines Ward, Dirk Nowitzki, soccer star Landon Donovan, Bruins goalie Tim Thomas, LPGA Hall of Famer Betsy King and others, Johnson’s dedication and five consecutive titles position him as the clear favorite in NASCAR’s season opener.
Johnson’s friend, Nick Lachey, may have said it best: “No driver combines talent, poise, and preparation like Jimmie does. He’s the best for a reason.”
This weekend’s Daytona 500 is on FOX.
