Zoo Miami cheetah picks Carl Edwards to win NSCS ChampionshipShare
With Ford Championship Weekend set to commence at Homestead-Miami Speedway this weekend, November 18-20, all eyes are on South Florida, as the track and the local community prepare to welcome fans and the NASCAR industry.
As part of the preparation, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, XFINITY Series and Camping World Truck Series trophies arrived at the scenic Miami Beach Marina in three Contender Boats. For the fourth consecutive year, Contender Boats will also be rewarding the Ford EcoBoost 400 winner with a 25-foot Bay Boat.
The trophies then made their way to Zoo Miami for the “Wildlife Prognosticator” event. The trophy was featured with Koda, a four-year-old cheetah who had the official role of Zoo Miami “Wildlife Prognosticator.” In a partnership with Homestead-Miami Speedway and Zoo Miami, Koda picked from numbered signs of the Championship 4 contenders Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards and Joey Logano– and made his prediction on who he thought would win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship this Sunday. In the end, Koda selected Carl Edwards as the victor.
“This is not a sporting event, it’s a cultural event,” said Zoo Miami Communications Director Ron Magill about Ford Championship Weekend. “There is no bigger event in Miami-Dade County. It is a huge benefit to have the pinnacle race of the season that determines the championship right here in Miami.”
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Ford EcoBoost 400 championship race will be decided this Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway where Busch, Johnson, Edwards and Logano will compete for the title amongst a full field of drivers. The Championship 4 driver to cross the finish line first after 267 laps will be crowned champion.
“South Florida is known for holding the best championship events and this weekend fans will get, not one, but three championship races and coronations from Friday to Sunday,” said Homestead-Miami Speedway President Matthew Becherer. “The Sprint Cup Series championship race this year is filled with storylines that will set the stage for what will be a great weekend.”
Homestead-Miami Speedway has been the host of the championship race each year since 2002 and as a community partner, Zoo Miami was part of the fun by having Koda, an African cheetah from South Africa, join all of the “experts” in predicting this year’s winner.
