Anthony Valdes, MIS Fan of the Month - July 2006Share
Valdes is the 12th and final MIS Fan of the Month eligible for the 2006 MIS Fan of the Year. He will be eligible to win a trip for two to Homestead, Florida to witness NASCAR's Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November 2006, along with the final race in the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup.
As if that wasn't enough, the MIS Fan of the Year prize also includes the use of the MIS showcar to display outside his/her home for a day (much like the Stanley Cup tour). The 2006 MIS Fan of the Year also receives two tickets to the MIS event of their choice for the next 10 years.
Please rate on a scale from 1 to 10 how big of an MIS fan you are? Why? "Definitely a 10! The early rising on a Sunday morning, the smell of everyone cooking out, the sun coming over the grandstands...it's like a postcard."
Why was your first race your most memorable? "The first race I attended was with my family back in 1992, this was the year we got to stand next to the fence nearest to the drivers at the end of the race and we got to get an autograph from Alan Kulwicki. That also was the year we all picked our drivers that we were going to root for. My wife Kim and I took Rusty Wallace, my brother Eddy and his wife Pam are true Dale Earnhardt fans. The rivalary they had was great to watch on the track."
Who is your favorite driver(s) and why? "Rusty Wallace is my all-time favorite. One year after our daughter Mariah was born we had taken her to the track, and it just so happens, Rusty's fan club was there. We all signed up and got to see the interview with him. He asked if there were any babies in the crowd and of course I held Mariah up. He asked that we bring her to the front and he signed a "future Rusty fan" bib for her which was great. We still have it in a safe place."
What is the greatest race weekend experience/moment for you at MIS? "Last August we got to walk down pit row for the first time. We have MIS to thank for that. It was tremendous to see all the pit stalls and where the drivers would pit during the race."
Who comes to the races with you? "It's a family event so many of my family members come to the races. My brother Dave, his wife Ann and kids Shayna & Chandler, my other brother Eddy and wife Pam and kids Chris, Nigel & Jessie, Don, Lisa (my niece) & Aiyanna Gallant, Nichole & Tyanne Valdes and myself, my wife Kim and daughter Mariah. It's a blast."
As a local resident from the Adrian area, it must be pretty cool to have a track like MIS around the corner. "It's the best! From Thursday until Sunday night, it's one exciting weekend. We've met so many drivers who visit Adrian - from Carl Edwards and Michael Waltrip to Jeff Burton. With the Speed Channel coverage becoming a fixture at MIS we stay at the track on Friday for Trackside and watch the show. It's a great feature." Since the start of the MIS Fan of the Month contest in December 2002, over 10,000 fans have registered for the contest at MIS' official website.
