MIS Set to Run IRL IndyCar Series on Sunday, Aug 5Share
Michigan International Speedway has added an Indy Racing League IndyCar Series race to its 2007 schedule, speedway President Roger Curtis announced today. The race will be held on Sunday, Aug. 5.
"Michigan International Speedway and our fans have been loyal supporters of open-wheel racing since 1968, and we look forward to continuing that tradition with the IndyCar Series in 2007," speedway President Roger Curtis said.
The Indy Racing League had originally agreed that it would race its IndyCar Series at MIS on July 22, but asked MIS to move the event to Aug. 5 to accommodate new venues for the series in 2007. The August race date at MIS is expected to be for one year only.
"MIS is one of the most exciting venues on the IRL's schedule. The track action and the wheel-to-wheel excitement for 400 miles are just two of the things that make this track so historic," Curtis said. "The loyalty of our ticket holders and their enthusiasm for the series is also what makes MIS so unique."
MIS is the only two-mile track currently on the Indy Racing League's 2007 schedule. The D-shaped oval configuration of MIS makes the high-speed racing both exciting and dramatic from start to finish.
But it may be its open-wheel history that MIS is known for. The 2007 IndyCar Series event will be the 55th open-wheel race at MIS. Winners of past open-wheel races here include Juan Pablo Montoya in 2000; Michael Andretti in 1987 and 1989; and his father Mario Andretti in 1980 and twice in 1984. Rick Mears, Johnny Rutherford, Gordon Johncock, Bobby Rahal, Bobby Unser, A.J. Foyt, Tom Sneva, Danny Sullivan and Nigel Mansell are just some of the open-wheel champions at MIS.
"Tradition, history and loyalty are all part of what makes MIS great," Curtis said. "While we had originally planned to hold the IndyCar Series race during what has been a traditional July date for us, we want to do our part to help the Indy Racing League grow its product and hope the race fans will, too. This is a one-time only scenario for us and we truly appreciate the support that race fans give us and motorsports year-round."
Race fans who had renewed tickets for the originally scheduled July 22 race will be contacted in the following weeks about how their ticket accounts will be handled for the new August 5 date.
