NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Dates Set For 2008Share
The sprint will be on for Cup tickets in 2008 at Michigan International Speedway. NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series, now known as the NEXTEL Cup Series, will return to Michigan International Speedway for two race weekends in 2008. America's premier motorsports series with the country's biggest names in auto racing will celebrate 40 seasons of racing at MIS next year on June 15 and Aug. 17. "We have great momentum heading into the second half of this season and into next year," speedway President Roger Curtis said. "Much of this is largely based on the number of improvements that we made at the facility, the partnerships that we are making with the surrounding communities and at the state level, and in the extensive time we've taken to talk to the fans. We're dedicated to making Michigan International Speedway the premier motorsports venue in the Midwest showcasing the very best in motorsports entertainment." Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman, Carl Edwards and others will be joined by the drivers of the NASCAR Busch Series, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and ARCA RE/MAX Series during two weekends of racing on the famed, two-mile oval. Michigan International Speedway will not host the IndyCar Series in 2008 due to the inability to secure a viable date. "Since its inaugural running in 2002, Michigan International Speedway, the state of Michigan, city of Jackson and other local communities made a major commitment to growing the IndyCar Series event," Curtis said. "I had hoped that we'd be able to reach an agreement with the IRL for 2008 given our historical investment in open-wheel racing that dates back four decades. We will focus all of our efforts on elevating our remaining marquee events, including providing our fans with a first-class and memorable race day experience. "In addition, Michigan International Speedway will continue to seek growth opportunities by exploring the feasibility of developing a road course for potential rental and appropriate spectator events as well as other ancillary events that utilize the track facilities," Curtis continued. Race fans may see the IndyCar Series race at MIS on Aug. 5. The high-speed action of the Firestone Indy 400 is held on the series' only two-mile oval and is known for its thrilling and close finishes and wide racing groove. Tickets are also on sale for the upcoming NASCAR weekend — the 3M Performance 400 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race on Aug. 19 and the CARFAX 250 NASCAR Busch Series race on Aug. 18. The speedway made significant changes to enhance the fan experience at Michigan International Speedway this season, including the refining of outbound traffic patterns and replacement of grandstands in Turn One with bigger, wider seats with seatbacks. The speedway is looking into other projects that will keep NASCAR racing, as well as other potential events, at the speedway in the future. For tickets to any events or for information about camping or fan hospitality for 2007, please call the track's ticket hotline at 800-354-1010 or log onto the speedway's official Web site, MISpeedway.com.
