Wisconsin couples first in lineShare
They were first in line for the very first Great Lakes Wine Fest at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday. And they traveled all the way from Wisconsin.
Greg Rakun and his wife Lynnette of Sheboygan Falls, Wisc., along with fellow couple Ken and Laurette Lammers of Plymouth, Wisc., were taking a vacation on the Michigan Wine Trail, when they heard about the Great Lakes Wine Fest and had to alter their trip a bit.
“We did alter our trip a bit to visit the Great Lakes Wine Festival today,” Lynnette Rakun said. “We had already traveled through the Upper Peninsula, down to Traverse City then Lansing before deciding to come here this morning. We didn’t exactly know when we would get here, but I guess we’re the first.”
The two couples will depart MIS later this afternoon to conclude their trip on the west side of Michigan. Lynnette and Laurette are sisters and the two couples have traveled to many states for different wine events. Their first trip to Michigan and the Great Lakes Wine Fest has been exciting thus far.
“We’ve never had Michigan wines before so this was the perfect trip for us,” Greg Rakun said. “We’ve always enjoyed wine and this seemed like a perfect event for us to stop at. Like Wisconsin, Michigan has very good wine. Michigan’s white grapes are very good.”
Laurette also liked the idea that the Great Lakes Wine Fest was located at MIS. Her husband Ken is a race fan.
“Ken is a big race fan so this is exciting for him to be able to visit MIS,” she said. “He’ll definitely take advantage of the pace car rides that are going on today.”
The focus of the Great Lakes Wine Fest is Michigan-based wineries and breweries conveniently situated at MIS. Guests may sample wines, beer and food from Michigan vendors, and buy favorite wines by the bottle or case in the retail store.
The festival’s on-site retail store will have select wines available for purchase at the event.
Sunday tickets are still available for $35. Each ticket includes $10 worth of tasting tokens per day.
Designated driver tickets are $25. This event is for guests 21 and older.
Day Two of the Great Lakes Wine Fest kicks off Sunday at Noon and concludes at 5 p.m.
Tickets and details are available at www.GreatLakesWineFest.com or by calling 800-354-1010. Visit our Twitter feed @GLWineFest for information about the wine festival in 140 characters or less!
