Take laps around MISShare
If race fans always wanted to take a lap on the high-banked two-mile oval of Michigan International Speedway, now is their chance.
On select dates in the month of August, the Irish Hills track will open the speedway for fans to take a few laps on the track, which has provided many great racing memories in its 43-year existence.
For $25, fans may take three laps around the track at a maximum speed of 70 mph. The laps will be paced by the MIS pace car. The scheduled dates are August 2-4, Aug. 6 and 23-25 with drive time scheduled between noon - 1 p.m. each day.
“Very few fans can say they’ve had the opportunity to drive on the high banks of MIS. Now we’re giving them a chance to say they did,” MIS President Roger Curtis said. “We’ve had a few track drives for charity in the past, but fans we’re never able to drive 70 mph on the racetrack. It will truly be a memorable experience for people who choose to participate on one of the August dates we’ve dedicated to this.”
Reservations may be made by calling 800-354-1010 (no online purchases are available). Advance sales are encouraged due to limited availability. Once a phone order has been placed, a ticket will be mailed to the guest in advance of their selected day. All guests must enter and present their ticket at the tunnel entrance to the track off of Brooklyn Highway.
Walk-up purchases can be made based on availability by visiting the MIS Administration Building between the hours of 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Fans can also visit MISpeedway.com/tracklaps for more information.
The track laps are limited to passenger vehicles only; no motorcycles. No passing of other vehicles will be allowed at any time. The driver of the vehicle must be 18 years of age and all participants will need to sign a waiver before driving on the track. Seatbelts and headlights must be on at all times. Laps will take place rain or shine. In the case of a date cancellation due to extreme weather or safety conditions, MIS will contact all guests in advance on their visit.
In the past, MIS has offered opportunities to drive on the track for a charity donation with great success. The MIS Cares Track Drive for Charity, held in December 2009, received thousands of food and toy donations, which benefited the CCIS Food Pantry in Brooklyn, Mich. and the local Jackson Toys for Tots. The speedway also conducted a track drive in 2005 to support the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Nestled in the lush Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, Michigan International Speedway is the Great Escape, a venerable NASCAR national park where fans can get away and enjoy the very best in racing and camaraderie. It’s the love of racing and the thrill of a great time for race fans and drivers alike.
